GENERAL INFORMATION

PASSPORTS AND VISAS
UK visitors to Sri Lanka are issued with a visa on arrival. This is valid for stays of up to 30 days. Visitors require a passport valid for more than
six months from the date of arrival, return or onward tickets, proof of accommodation and sufficient funds for the duration of their stay. An
embarkation tax is payable on departure at the international airport.

VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH
A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from all travellers who have passed through a partly or wholly infected area within the
preceding six days. Protection against malaria is recommended for travel to certain endemic areas. Please always check with your GP.

CURRENCY
Sri Lankan Rupee (SRs) = 100 cents. ATM's are available at all main banks. All major credit cards are accepted in banks, most hotels, restaurants and tourist shops.

CLIMATE
Sri Lanka enjoys a year round tropical climate with an average coastal temperature of 27º celsius. The central hills are cooler with temperatures dropping to 14º celsius. The south-western monsoon brings rain to the western, southern and central regions from May to July. Seas may be choppy during this period and may not be safe for swimming. The north-eastern monsoon occurs in the north and east between December and January.

Sri Lanka is, to be sure, one of the most beautiful islands in the world. A 270 mile long, tear-drop shaped earth, situated at the southern crown of the Indian sub-continent and fenced in by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Ceylon is blessed with favorable, flaxen beaches and a apparently endless and uncorrupted medallion fringed coastline.

The best of these are to be felt in the south-west of the island between the working capital, Colombo and the fort metropolis of Galle. The compact inside, moving up to a cooling system 2,000 beats, is rich in rivers, currents and falls ; spicery gardens and tea woodlets ; mist-shrouded masses, ravines and tropical rain forests and a wealth of ancient, archaeologic and historical situations dating back over 2,500 classes.
Sri Lanka has undergone many changes of name in its long chronicle although the Singhalese have constantly referred to that as 'Lanka' and the Tamils as 'Ilankai'. It's earliest entered name was Taprobane (Roman) but it has besides been known as Serendib (Arabic language), from which the word 'serendipity' is deducted, Ceilão (Portuguese), Ceylan (Dutch) and more late Ceylon (British). The current name was espoused after independence in 1972.
Sri Lanka has undergone considerable Sturm und Drang recently, grading from on-again, off-again political and heathenish fermentation to the more late ineffable destruction and tragical red of sprightliness unleashed on the population without warning by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. In spitefulness of this Ceylon's many and wide ranging habitants are rightfully some of the most outgoing, friendly, welcoming and authentically delicious peoples that you are always likely to have the good fortune to touch.
